Cuyahoga - Rare Visitor Departs Duluth with Iron Ore

Here we see the Cuyahoga, a relatively rare visitor to Duluth, Minnesota departing on June 9, 2020 with a load of iron ore she picked up at the Canadian National dock. The Cuyahoga typically only visits Duluth an average of once or twice a year at most, so it's nice to have finally captured her for this channel. The video starts with her backing out of the CN dock, making a pivot, then heading towards the shipping canal and then out onto Lake Superior. We see her pass the Midwest Energy dock, go under the Blatnik highway bridge, then finally pass under the Aerial Lift Bridge. If you prefer to just watch her pass through the shipping canal and give her salute, skip ahead to 5:20.

The 620-foot Cuyahoga was launched in 1943 and was originally named the J. Burton Ayers. She was the fifth of six A1 "Maritimers" built during the rush to increase shipping to support the war effort. She was originally a straight decker and didn't obtain her self-unloading equipment until the 1973/1974 season. She was renamed the Cuyahoga in 1995 when she went into service with Lower Lakes Towing. The Cuyahoga is currently the fourth oldest lake carrier in service and the second oldest Canadian laker in service. The Alpena (1942), Lee A. Tregurtha (1942), and Mississagi (1943) are older.

For some of my videos, I try to capture as much of the journey between the dock and the lake as possible. Let me know if you enjoy these longer videos showing more of that journey. Or let me know if you just like watching the ships pass through the canal and give a salute.
