1000 LONDONERS

This film is part of 1000 Londoners, a five-year digital project which aims to create a digital portrait of a city through 1000 of the people who identify themselves with it. The profile contains a 3 minute film that gives an insight into the life of the Londoner, as well as their personal photos of London and some answers to crucial questions about their views on London life. Over the course of the project we aim to reveal as many facets of the capital as possible, seeing city life from 1000 points of view.

Transcript:
I grew up in Bermondsey in the 60s and 70s. We grew up in a working-class family, my mum and dad, they were both factory workers. Even though I was an only child, I had aunts and uncles all living nearby, really close extended family just walked up the road and bumped into somebody you were related to, which meant you couldn't be naughty because you'd be spotted. We didn't have a lot of money but a lot of kindness and a lot of love. My parents were just really caring people and for them I think love was something you do, you know, rather than you say. Especially my dad, first time I started my job, he went with me and everyone in my family has got a similar story. Sometimes we didn't know where he'd got to, he'd pop out for a pint of milk and kind of go missing for a little while and then he'd come back and say he's helped someone. You know that's the kind of person he was. You know looking back I think it's probably because of my parents and the way they were in the world that I've gone into the line of work that I have. For 25 years I worked for Citizens Advise. I started off as a volunteer and worked my way up and eventually I was CEO of an advice centre. Now I'm self-employed. One of the organisations I worked for is a charity called Young Women's Trust and it provides telephone coaching for women around employability. It feels like my second home down in Southbank. I come up here and work, I bring my laptop or I might meet people and coach up here. I work with all kinds of young women. Young women who have maybe left school with no qualifications or few qualifications. Perhaps they've had care and responsibilities. It's a new phase of their life going into the world of work. What helps me reach out to strangers is, I don't even think of people being strangers, they're people, they're just other humans. I got into coaching because I had coaching. I didn't know what it was and it made such a profound effect on me, I was feeling very stuck and, you know, really confused and it helped me clarify things, it helped me know that I had the resources inside of me to make changes. I've had a very difficult time in my life and I lost my mum and my 2 best friends within weeks of each other. It was really traumatic for me and it took me a long time to get over that and now I just feel like, yeah I've done the healing and I just want to look forward to the future. The most rewarding part of my job is when someone starts to see themselves differently because usually I could see it and other people they know can see it straight away but they're not seeing it themselves and they just come to this point where suddenly, the penny drops. That they've got all these good qualities and in that moment, that's when the magic happens really. It's wonderful. Yeah. It makes me very happy.
