"It is not about the gear, it is about you as a photographer" Meet George Londoner #317

To George, photography is never about the gear you use, but rather the kind of photographer you want to be and the story you want to tell.

1000 LONDONERS

This film is part of 1000 Londoners, a ten-year digital project which aims to create a digital portrait of a city through 1000 of the people who identify themselves with it. The profile contains a 3 minute film that gives an insight into the life of the Londoner, as well as their personal photos of London and some answers to crucial questions about their views on London life. Over the course of the project we aim to reveal as many facets of the capital as possible, seeing city life from 1000 points of view.

TRANSCRIPT

Right, my name is George Whale and I am a media technician and freelance photographer. So I got into photography when I was probably doing my A-Level Film Studies, when I first started to use a camera and I really got into it during my degree which I did in Media Practice at University of Sussex.

Barz and Brutalism, is a project that I have been doing for about 2 years. I started it in my final year of University. It was a year long photographic based project, and it was all based on the theme of symmetry and basically the whole point of the project, is to show the relationship between brutalist architecture and post-war architecture in London and its importance with the UK Rap and Grime scene.

Both of those areas are kind of politically torn between people, people either like them, people hate them, and I am trying to say that they are really positive part of our society and they shouldn't be gentrified or demolished. They should be buildings that you know, share a national heritage to them. Since that genre of music has become such a huge part of London's culture.

When the main part of the project started, mainly I just started photographed as many brutalist, and post-war kind of estates as I could, but I couldn't think of a way to kind of connect them together because some of the other people have photographed these places, but I needed a way to tie them all together and I think I just, I was with my housemate one day at university just watching GRM Daily, LinkUp TV videos and came to the realisation, I can't remember what the first video was, must have been P Money by Wiley, it was outside Balfron Tower, I was like oh I have shot there before.

And another video came on, realised that I shot at that estate and that estate, and then I realised right, I need to go through all the videos on their channel work out what estates I have been to and tie them all together, research certain artists like their upbringing, just like any way that these grime artists in the UK could relate to these buildings, I tied them all together and places that had the most connections I had chosen, that is the collection that I have now.

So I recently had an exhibition for Barz and Brutalism, which was part of the London Festival of Architecture this year. It took place at Alexandre and Ainsworth Estate Tenancy and Residents Hall, which is in Camden. It was a great success. We had lots of people come through about 200-300 people came through for the event, and it just really kicked off since then.

We have had artists want to be involved, Royal College would have been involved, it's just really kicking off and I couldn't be happier really. My advise to young aspiring photographers is, don't worry about the price of the camera, just get a camera and get out shooting. It is not about the gear, it is about you as a photographer. Get out there and shoot.
