Local woman giving back to her community - Trudy, Londoner #283

Trudy used to work in the city but left to give back to her local community, running TETH Youth and Adult Services, a community based non-profit organisation in Brent helping youths and vulnerable adults through sports and other activities.

1000 LONDONERS

This film is part of 1000 Londoners, a ten-year digital project which aims to create a digital portrait of a city through 1000 of the people who identify themselves with it. The profile contains a 3 minute film that gives an insight into the life of the Londoner, as well as their personal photos of London and some answers to crucial questions about their views on London life. Over the course of the project we aim to reveal as many facets of the capital as possible, seeing city life from 1000 points of view.

1000 Londoners is produced by South London based film production company and social enterprise, Chocolate Films. The filmmakers from Chocolate Films will be both producing the films and providing opportunities to young people and community groups to make their own short documentaries, which will contribute to the 1000 films. TRANSCRIPT

So this space means a lot to me because being in this area I was at the peek of my career.
So I studied to be an accountant and being in this area is where I got my dream job.
Being in that field helped me to know that you can do anything as a woman or as a man, it doesn't really matter.
So the project I set up is called Teth Youth and Adult services is getting young people into physical sports and helping their wellbeing.
What happens when the young people don't have anything to do, they tend to end up hanging out on the streets more.
Them hanging out on the street is really effecting the community as well as it's effecting their lives.
So for me I wanted to have role models for my kids and I thought by me doing something about it will help make a difference and change.
We run a 3 week netball program part of that program we did a tournament.
The young girls that I work with they'd only been training for 3 weeks and one of the girls managed to become woman of the match.
Which was amazing because she has only been playing for 3 weeks.
It was challenging but it was very easy to engage because I worked in housing so I worked with a lot of the families in the area that I'm working in.
So that was very helpful to engage with the young people and as I look young so young people are drawn to that.
So that helped me to engage with them, without them knowing my real age.
My life would have been completely different if I stayed in finance in a corporate background.
I wouldn't be the woman I am today, where as now I'm a role model to a younger generation.
That's what I want for my kids so that transition has helped me now to be a part of society and to give back to the community that I'm from.
