Classic Asian Poached Pear - Dessert Recipe # 8

Happy Holiday everyone! This Friday we want to share a light dessert using a pear. Pears are a winter fruit and personally I am never fond of raw pears, especially the texture. Luckily growing up in Asia I was introduced to cooked pear where adults would make for kids when they are sick. It is light and totally transforms the texture of the pear. When you serve this dish cold, it tastes even better.

Recipe:

Ingredients:

1 pear (cut the top off as a lid, cut a hole at where the seeds part of the pear).
2 star anise
1 tsp cinnamon or 1 cinnamon stick
1/4 tsp ground ginger or 2 small thin slices of raw ginger
1/4 tsp vanilla extract or 1 small piece of vanilla bean
water to cover 1/5 depth of the sauce pan
handful pinenuts
1 large date chopped
1 tsp honey

Instructions:

1. Put the star anise, cinnamon, vanilla extract, ginger and water into a sauce pan.

2. Put honey, date, and pinenuts into the center hole of the pear and close the pear with the top lid. Put it into the sauce pan.

3. Cover the sauce pan with a lid and turn the stove to medium high heat. Let it simmer for about 30 min or until the pear is soft.

You can serve it warm, especially if you are sick, or you can put it in the fridge and serve it cold. Either way it is a perfect light dessert.
