DIY Loft Conversion - Slum To Palace - Final Stud Wall & 1st Coat Painting - Rollin' Rollin' Rollin'

It was March 2020 when I started my DIY Loft Conversion in anger and quite literally 1 year later we have an almost habitable space. But as they always say, the last 20% takes 80% of the time. I finally got the plasterboard finished and the rooms all now plastered so its time to build the last end wall, a stud timber wall in the en-suite, and tidy up to get the rooms painted.
This keeps down the dust but also makes the space so much lighter/brighter and pleasant to work in.

So to begin with there is some tidying up to do and then on to the stud wall and then painting.

Building a stud wall is about getting the floor plate in the right place. The floor plate is the bottom timber screwed onto the floor which you build up from. It will set the position of the wall and so it its too close or far away from the wall I'm covering, it will go up wonky. You will see me take a long time measuring and setting it up, then adding another horizontal and then verticals. Finally laterals (noggins) to support the composite wall panels (composite backer boards for tiling). Voila !

The first coat of paint on fresh plaster is called the 'scratch' coat. It really is there to seal the plaster and you will need additional coats to make it look good. The new paint is literally 'sucked' into the plaster so you can't spread it about much.

I used mostly a trade paint I got from Screwfix which is designed for the job. It is 'breathable' so can go on even when the plaster is slightly damp, apparently. This is pretty good. However the cheaper method is to cut down a water based paint 50:50 with water. I do this in the en-suite. It is pretty runny but does the job and might save you a few quid.

So first you paint the corners and around sockets, windows, features. This is called 'cutting in' and takes as long as the large areas as its fiddly. I use. brush but you can use a special roller too. Do this before you get the big roller out or you will see the brush marks in the finished result. Next its just Rollin rollin rollin....and before too long you have your first coat - and what a HUGE difference that makes.

You will need 1 or probably 2 further coats. I'm using a 'tough' paint which is washable for long term robustness and the end wall will get papered for a feature.

Rollers are cheap and pretty quick and if you don't want to clean then, cheap enough to put in the bin.
