Electric Car Virgins – Which EV For Our Family?

Let's not be embarrassed. We are not the only ones anxious about what it feels like to pop our EV cherry. In the UK today out of 36 million cars only 165,000 are fully electric, so we decided to take some for a test drive to understand what the hype, truth, myths and facts are around looking to own an Electric Vehicle.

This is no ordinary comparison test drive of 4 EVs. This is the experience from two virgin EV drivers navigating through the maze of choosing an electric car. The good, the bad and the down right silly.

Like most families with a couple of kids we too have a main (bigger) family car and a small run-around. For various reasons both will need to be replaced and so we are now faced with the daunting task of choosing a new car for the family, but which one? Do we Go In Go Big with a new larger family car or go Modest Mindy by replacing the small family car?

We also wonder if it’s time to go all Eco Warrior? Do we go EV? What about hybrids? Or do we just keep drinking Mother Earth’s life blood with a replacement fossil fuel car?

Let’s get to the point. We decided one car needs to go and one car needs to arrive and that car will be electric. Why? Because we just want one. Yes we have done the maths on fuel, cost etc which can be justified any way you like, but the long and the short of it is that we just want one.

So we did what everyone does and became EV Google Experts. Lots of research later and we down-selected two run-arounds and two family cars.

The run-arounds were the early adaptor BMW i3 which looks funky, is reasonably priced and claims to offer performance and space even though its modestly built. In the other corner is the eMini. We owned a mini some years ago and thought these looked cool, but also they are cheap. In round numbers a eMini will cost about £350 per month compared to the I3 at £409.

Moving up from featherweight to heavyweight we settled upon the Tesla Model 3 and the Jaguar iPace. These would have been more like £569 and £900 per month all in but offered performance, room and luxury or tech.

So we arranged 5 day test drives for each and in this video we share our experiences both driving and in discussion afterwards. We also show cost, real life range, battery size and acceleration statistics for comparison.
