Slash Pine (Pinus elliottii)
Found from South Carolina down to southern tip of Florida and west to Mississippi, the Slash Pine (Pinus elliottii) is a major component to the southern pine forest ecosystems of the Southeast United States. While this plant is well adapted for fire, in many areas wildfires are inhibited and therefore the balance of these pinelands are oftentimes disturbed. Vast human development of the southeastern United States has taken much of this organism's original range. Additionally, logging of the valuable wood and fire suppression near human habitation has also contributed to the overall loss of the original pine forests of the southeastern United States.
