Chautauqua Gorge State Park Mayville, New York

The Chautauqua Gorge is a small gorge that runs roughly from Mayville, New York to Lake Erie, where it empties out near Barcelona Harbor in Westfield, New York.
The geology is interesting as Devonia-age sedimentary shale, harboring and interesting and ancient marine fossils is interspersed with glacial till and erratics of the last couple hundred thousand years. Fun stuff to look at, varied colors, sizes, textures, crystals, fossils, etc, best of all "skip rocks".
This area spans forests dominated by Canada Hemlock, American Beech and Sugar Maple. The understory is quite diverse. Liverworts, lady slipper orchids, several ferns, many spring ephemeral wildflowers and temperate shrubs such as spicebush abound.
The fauna is equally diverse with black bear, white-tailed deer, coyote, beaver, opossum, raccoon, skunk, fishers, weasels and numerous birds, amphibians and reptiles as well.
