Skunk Cabbage (Symplocarpus foetidus)
A member of the Araceae family, the Arums or Aroids, a truly odd family of plants. Skunk cabbage fits this mold as it is a thermogenic plant, creating it's own heat to melt the snow in order to bloom at the end of winter. Generally, flies are more active in the cold than bees or other pollinators, and so between it's early bloom time, maroon-ish color (many plants with marron coloration are attractive to flies), warm micro-climate and wretched smell, this plant attracts many flies, but other insects as well. The skunky smell is also a good deterrent to deer, especially in late winter, when they are sure to be hungry and ready to consume anything fresh.
