Leeks (Allium tricoccum)

Leeks or Ramps are well known to forest visitors in spring in the eastern deciduous forests of North America. Members of the Onion tribe, their broad green foliage is the first hint of their lifecycle in the spring. Tiny white flowers emerge when the foliage has died back and later black seeds follow. This plant is an iconic part of the North American Temperate Forest and North American natural heritage. Indigenous, Colonialist, and modern people alike have used this plant and valued it for various reasons.
Leeks are edible; however, they should not be taken from the wild and, in my opinion, wild edibles should be grown at home and left for the wild.
