How Indycar's Pato O'Ward went from Red Bull reject to an F1 test with McLaren

IndyCar driver Pato O'Ward is Mexico's hottest young racing talent, and he will test a Formula 1 car for McLaren at the end of the 2021 season in the young drivers test at Abu Dhabi.
Ahead of the Mexican GP, we look at O'Wards career so far, including his stellar IndyCar career, and his difficult times as part of the Red Bull Junior Program.
O'Ward's career skyrocketed after joining Arrow McLaren in Indycar in 2020, where he went on to take a pole position in his fourth race for the team. McLaren CEO Zak Brown then challenged O'Ward to win a race in 2021 to earn a Formula 1 test.
The young Mexican took the chance by winning the IndyCar Grand Prix of Texas earlier this year, before going to challengr for the IndyCar title and taking one of the best wins of the season in Detroit, with a stunning late pass on Josef Newgarden.
Should O'Ward move to F1 in the future, it would most likely be with McLaren. But this would be dependent on McLaren taking a chance on the young Mexican, as well as a space being available in the seats currently occupied by Daniel Ricciardo and Lando Norris.
