Conversation 021: Composer, Musician, and Producer Walter Martin
Walter Martin’s storied career kicked off with the mid-nineties band Jonathan Fire * Eater, following Walt co-founded the famous New York rock band The Walkmen, and thereafter seeding a multi-award-winning solo career. Producing five full length works, two of which were Parent’s Choice award winning family albums. I’d be remiss not to mention Walt’s “The World at Night” released in 2020, a work that is a mixture of colorful storytelling and melodies that injects a renewed vibrancy to a listener’s soul, a much-needed reprieve from a year that has brought so much darkness.
My conversation with Walt took place in July, him I believe in New York, and I in Massachusetts, attempting to enjoy a piece of a normal summer. Though it’s weird how time speeds forward without regard; currently I type this at the end of November recollecting upon this delightful conversation with a master of his craft.
A discussion which touched upon the art of composing, his numerous collaborations (a few with his friend Matt Berninger), his longing to write a Broadway musical, a brief interruption as Walt had to answer the door, and ending with Human evolutionary progression, inspired by my reading of Yuval Noah Harari’s “Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind.”
Please enjoy,
