Today we are going to speak about common misconceptions about becoming a student in the United States and applying for a student visa.

👉Misconception number 1:
There is a limit on the number of international students studying in the United States. False❗ There is no limit on the number of foreign students that can study in the united states each year. The United States welcomes all foreign students regardless of their nationality.

👉Misconception number 2:
You should hire a consultancy to help you improve your chances of getting a student visa. False❗ You do not need to hire a visa consultant to improve your chances of getting a student visa or applying for a US university. You can also contact the United States Education Foundation to inform yourself about how to apply for a US university.

👉Misconception number 3:
As a foreign student you are allowed to work while you attend university in the United States. Partially false❗ Students that are attending universities in the United States on an F1 visa are not allowed to work off-campus during their first academic year, and may only work on campus if certain conditions and restrictions are met. After the first academic year, international students on an F1 visa may be able to engage in work outside of campus under the 3 employment structures:
1. curricular practical training;
2. optional practical training;
3. STEM optional practical training
Any other types of employment while you are a student in the United States on an F1 visa are illegal and they are a violation of your F1 student status.

👉Misconception number 4:
It is easier to get a student visa if you apply to certain universities in the United States or in particular fields of study. False❗ There is no magic formula to getting a student visa to study in the US. In fact, the requirements for the student visa are the same regardless of the major you choose or the interests, or what university you go to or what is level of education, whether you will be going for your bachelor, master or Ph.D., etc.
The requirements to apply and qualify for an F1 student visa are
1. you intend to come to the United States to study and for no other purpose.
2. you can pay for your studies in the US.
3. you intend to depart the United States at the completion of your studies.

👉Misconception number 5:
If you have family in the United States you will never qualify for a student visa. This is false❗ Of course it is possible to get a student visa if you have family living in the US. However, you will need to convince the consular officer that you are applying for a student visa because you intend to study in the United States and you are not simply applying only to come and live permanently with your family in the United States.
