Artesania Latina 1/10th scale wood stage coach
Karyn's next project is the Artesania Latina 1/10th scale wood stagecoach. While usually ship models, these Spanish wood kits are some of the best models on the market.
INTERESTING HISTORY:
Before the transcontinental railroad, traveling in the west meant riding in an expensive stagecoach, riding a horse or walking. So unless you were able to walk 1000 miles or willing to put up with saddle sores you took the stage. Usually a Wells Fargo stage. One coach, two drivers and six horses to move at most six passengers perhaps 50 miles per day. Wells Fargo carried the mail as well. Pony Express while a fun and amazing moment in western expansion was actually a failed experiment. 20 boys riding 100 horses at full speed were able to get one very small mailbag a few hundred miles. To understate the problem, this was expensive. And freight was moved on heavy freight wagons by American Express teamsters. (My great great grandfather rode home from St Louis to Salt Lake City riding on top of a load of lumber on one of these freight wagons. Which was one wagon in a ten wagon train. Three weeks 14 hours per day riding on top of a bouncing load of wood. BUT it beats walking AND the stagecoach was very expensive!) After the transcontinental railroad ended this horror, both of these companies used their wealth to become banks. Hum.....
From the web:
Evolving from designs as early as 1716, the 1848 Stage Coach became the most useful and recognizable of them all. As the only means of cross-country public transportation before the trans-continental railroad, the stage coach played a key role in delivering not only people, but also mail, news and money to the rapidly-expanding west.
This museum-quality, 1/10 scale Heritage Collection replica of an 1848 Stage Coach includes fine-quality high-precision laser-cut wood parts and strips; turned brass pieces, photo-etched details and hinges; simulated leather for driver and passenger compartments; working lights, doors and suspension; wood wheel parts; and detailed step-by-step building instructions with over 400 photos. Recommended for modelers with previous building experience. Length: 15.8 inches; width: 4.9 inches; height: 10.2 inches.
