Russian Iron - American Iron and Nevada Northern number 40

When Nevada Northern number 40 was given to the people of Ely Nevada it had a rare bare metal boiler jacket made from either "Russian Iron" or "American Iron".

Back in 1986 - 1987 when the Nevada Northern was made a museum by Kennacott and the people of Ely Nevada the pride of the museum was steam locomotive #40, the "Ghost Train". As found the locomotive had a bare metal boiler jacket. As early paints could not take the heat of the boiler, in the very early days a process for protecting and coloring bare metal was developed in Russia. In a secretive process, powders were used to apply a surface to the metal.

Later a process was also developed in America closely resembling gun blueing. There has been a debate about which of these processes were used on Nevada Northern #40 but generally, it seems to be American Iron. And the color was a rich deep green.

As the look was somewhat shaby the museum opted to paint over the original iron with gloss black. BUT there is a move to return the locomotive to its original metal jacket.
