Saginaw - A Rare Visitor Brings Salt to Duluth

Here is a newcomer to this channel... the classic laker Saginaw is seen delivering a load of salt to Duluth, Minnesota on the morning of October 25, 2019. The Saginaw was launched as the John J. Boland in 1953. She is 693 feet in length with a cargo carrying capacity of 20,200 tons. She sailed for the American Steampship Company until 1999, when she was sold to the Lower Lakes Towing Co. and renamed the Saginaw. (Note: The name John J. Boland was then given to another vessel in the American Steamship Co. fleet... which you can see if you look through the videos from earlier this year on this channel.)

This was only the Saginaw's second visit to Duluth for the 2019-2020 shipping season, so she always brings out the boat watchers whenever she arrives.

The first part of the video shows her entering through the Duluth shipping canal. We then moved over to the old highway bridge in the shadow of the Blatnik bridge to watch the Saginaw make her way towards the Hallet 8 dock in Superior, where she would discharge her load of salt. She would leave empty later that evening and make her way towards Thunder Bay... but you'll see that departure in a later video if you stayed tuned!

Note: The sound you hear around 1:40 in the video was from the Minnesota Air National Guard flying their F-16 fighter jets over Duluth. They are stationed in the area and can occasionally be seen and heard doing exercises... more heard than seen, usually!
