The Core Of The Shoulder [Serratus Anterior]

💪🏽Serratus Anterior, which is also known as the “Big Swing Muscle” or “Boxer’s muscle” due to its effectiveness of protracting the scapula. Not only does this muscle have a cool name, but it is also needed for a plethora of arm movements; weather open chain (punching/grabbing something out of the cabinet) or closed chain (pushups, planks, downward dogs, or handstands). Due to its large role in stabilizing the scapula, inadequate strength here is often the culprit of scapula winging.

. 🔥Here is a great image by @pheasyque followed by a few of our favorite exercises to target this muscle including:
1️⃣Bear Crawl Variations
2️⃣Supine Banded Scaption
3️⃣Reverse Scapula Walks
4️⃣Bear Hugs using @crossoversymmetry bands

🏋️‍♂️I love closed chain exercises to help patients/clients to help improve scapular control. However, it is important to note I often do not start people at this degree of challenge. These are progressed exercises, I always make sure scapula control is mastered prior to loading through these complex movements.
. 📝Shoulder aches and pains often get neglected until it’s too late, turning a minor fixable ache into a potential chronic pain and debilitating issue. Using the latest evidence-based research and our clinical experience, we have pioneered a very safe and effective Shoulder [P]Rehab Program, visit link in bio for more!
