7. Bully Kutta
Weighing in at 200 plus pounds from the Punjab region in India is the staggeringly massive Bully Kutta. The breed has a fearless nature along with great stamina and tremendous power. Unfortunately the Bully Kutta’s awesome innate abilities have made it a target of dog fighters and dog fighting in countries where it’s legal. It’s a rare breed that originally came from Southern India.
6. Caucasian Shepherd
Domesticated animals with proper training aren’t a threat to humans. But there are those dogs who have lazy, bad owners and consequently they turn into terrifying creatures that could be a potential threat. There is no breed of dog in which proper training is of more paramount importance then the caucasian shepherd. They are a huge breed, weighing in at over 200 pounds with incredible strength. When properly trained they are great dogs who would do anything to protect their owners. This comes from their use as shepherds to guard and flock farm animals for hundreds of years. Their robust build and massive power allows them to fend off wolves or even bears if necessary. If not properly socialized and trained however they can exhibit aggressive, unmanageable tendencies, especially towards strangers, that can lead to attacks and injuries. They are popular in Russia and, especially Georgia.
5. Pyrenean Mastiff
Originally from the Aragonese Pyrenees in Spain these dogs usually weigh around 180 pounds but can get up to and even over 220. Their adorable dogs that often have irregular black or brown spots on their fur. Though their heavy coat and voracious diet make them expensive to keep they are awesome pets. They are self reliant and calm while also being extremely protective with people and other animals it knows, specifically children.
4. Newfoundland
Originally these dogs were bred as workers for fishermen in Newfoundland, which today is a part of Canada. Because of their history along with their intelligence and muscular build they are excellent swimmers and water rescue dogs who have a thick double coat as well as webbed feet. They don’t do the typical dog paddle. They have an actual form to their swim game that gives them more power with every stroke. They weigh between 140 and 170 pounds on average, but the biggest individuals have been known to weigh 250 pounds. Like a lot of large dog breeds these guys tend to drool a lot, especially in hot weather.
3. St. Bernard
Clearly St. Bernard’s are our friends. Barry, one of the most famous of his breed, cemented the St. Bernard’s legacy by spending his days as a mountain rescue dog in Switzerland in the early 1800’s. During his lifetime he was credited with saving at least forty people, including this small child. As the story goes Barry found the boy in the snow and convinced him to climb on his back before carrying him to safety. Stories of St. Bernard’s pulling off insane alpine rescues can be found throughout history. But we digress. With an average weight somewhere between 200 and 260 pounds St. Bernards are not big, their giant dogs who have long, heavy low hanging tails.
2. Great Dane
They sure aren’t the heaviest of dogs, but Great Dane’s regularly appear in the record books as the world’s tallest dogs. Just look at how big they are compared to chihuahuas. The aptly named Zeus, a Great Dane that lived in Michigan appeared in the Guinness Book of World Records as the tallest dog in both 2012 and 2013. Standing on his hind legs he stretched over 7 feet 4 inches, which is taller than Shaq! Luckily these beasts are gentle giants that have a friendly nature and are noted for seeking physical affection from their owners. They often experience the health problems that are often associated with larger canine breeds and consequently have a fairly short lifespan of six to eight years.
