6. Daniel Kaluuya’s Acting Abilities
If you’ve seen Black Panther, Daniel Kaluuya plays the best friend to titular character T’Challa and is the head of Wakanda’s first line of defense aka rhinos. If you’re wondering where this newcomer is from, well, technically speaking he’s no newcomer. Fans of the 2017 hit horror film Get Out will recognize Kaluuya as the actor who plays the lead character Chris that goes away for the weekend to meet his girlfriend’s parents. For his audition, Jordan Peele had him cry a single tear five times at the same exact moment every time. He was cast and then his talent shined through in the role and that’s what led to him getting the role of W’Kabi in Black Panther.
5. Chadwick Boseman’s Choice
Creating a character from scratch takes a lot of hard work and a lot of the finer details that involve things like backstory are crafted by the actor if it’s not a given in the script. These details don’t get shared with the public but every so often an actor will explain such a tidbit in an interview. That’s what Chadwick Boseman did when he spoke in regards to the accent of his Black Panther character King T’Challa. He went on to explain that because Wakanda is a hidden nation that has been untouched by colonization that it would not make sense for him to speak with a European accent. That’s why he gave him a Xhosa accent and to even more so to “make a point about white supremacy.”
4. Forest Whitaker’s Pipes
We’ve already discussed the greatness that is Forest Whitaker but we did forget to mention one impressive thing. Before he was a big-time actor, Forest Whitaker was actually a jock. Yeah, he played for California State Polytechnic University on a football scholarship until he hurt his back and then changed his major to music. That’s not the impressive thing. He has a sight of pipes that can really sing as he toured with the Cal Poly Chamber singers in England during 1980. His singing ability was so good that he got offered to go to both the Music Conservatory to study opera and the Drama Conservatory at the University of Southern California. Ultimately, he chose drama and look at him now.
3. Angela Bassett’s Education
Angela Bassett is hailed as being a queen in the realm of acting and of course, it’s all thanks to her talent that makes her so iconic. It can be argued that talent like that is either forged through hard work or that by some grace of god it’s bestowed on a select few. Angela Bassett seems to have the best of both worlds as she went to the prestigious Yale School of Drama where she would go on to earn her Masters in Fine Arts. It’s also here that she met her future husband and fellow actor Courtney B. Vance who starred in the People Vs. O.J. Simpson with Bassett’s Black Panther co-star Sterling K. Brown.
2. Danai Gurira’s Talent
Not only is she a phenomenal actress who can be seen currently starring in AMC’s The Walking Dead as Michonne, Danai Gurira also happens to be a well-accomplished playwright. We’re not exaggerating here when we say that she’s “accomplished” but if you’re not 100 percent convinced then well let her Tony do all the talking. Her play Eclipsed was nominated for two Tonys actually with the first being the Tony for best play and the second for best costume design in a play where she took home the latter. Does the play sound familiar? It just so happens that her fellow Black Panther co-stars Letitia Wright and Lupita Nyong’o both starred in her Broadway show.
1. Lupita Nyong'o’s Heritage
You wouldn’t be able to tell just by looking at the 35-year-old actress but looks can be deceiving as Nyong’o actually hails from the country of Mexico. It’s true, her parents were living in Mexico City at the time of her birth as that’s where her father was currently teaching. Not only that, but she is also of Kenyan descent. This makes her the first Mexican actress as well as simultaneously being the first Kenyan actress to win the Oscar for best-supporting actress as we previously mentioned. Since she was born in Mexico City, Lupita is fluent in speaking Spanish but also knows how to speak Luo, Swahili, and English.
