7. The Main Street Meltdown
Two artists, Nora Ligorano and Marshall Reese, installed this 1,500-pound ice sculpture in Manhattan’s financial district on October 29, 2008, to mark the 79th anniversary of the day the stock market crashed. The word Economy stood five feet tall and fifteen feet wide on a pedestal while it slowly melted away symbolically representing not only the failing economy of eight decades ago, but the state of the U.S. economy at that time. The work was one of a series that also included the word Democracy melting away in front of the Republican National Convention in St. Paul, Minnesota.

6. Snow Windows
English artist Tom Baker has been creating these stunning windows by using just snow spray and a dry paintbrush. He started the technique in 2007, gave it up for years and picked it up again in 2015, launching a business called Snow Windows out of his unique hobby. Occasionally Baker uses sketches, but often he simply comes up with the intricate winter scenes off the top of his head.

5. Batman in Chinatown
Like he did against Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Mr. Freeze in Batman and Robin, Batman arose from the ice in early March, at least for a little while. George Li sculpted this amazing Batman in the snow outside of his office in Boston’s Chinatown. Li with the use of a shovel, his keys for the eyes and his six-year-old son’s sand shovel for the lines and features created this awesome, temporary Batman. The Batman statue wasn’t the first time Li had drawn attention for an artistic public display. He also carved B STRONG into a snow mound in the Boston Common and an Easter Bunny in a snowy Public Garden in the past.

4. Sand Dogs
A few years ago these sand dogs began popping up all over Britain. They were so incredible that passers-by couldn’t believe they were done by hand and accused the artists of making them beforehand or by using a mold. To prove the doubters wrong a street artist built a dog from scratch for a photographer, leaving no doubt of the incredible nature of England’s spectacular sand dogs.

3. Melting Ice Cream Truck
Unveiled in 2006 during Sculpture by the Sea, Australia’s largest annual outdoor sculpture exhibition this melting ice cream truck, called Hot with the Chance of Late Storm, was designed by art collective Glue Society. The impressive work has remained in the spotlight thanks to its use in an amusing meme taken advantage of by Australians during the country’s notorious heatwaves.

2. The Sand Master of Cornwall
Chris Haworth must have an easy time letting go of things. That’s because he creates some of the most beautiful, but temporary works of sand art you will ever have a chance to see. With nothing more than a rake, Haworth drives to nearby Gwithian beach, where he creates a variety of designs. Of course, none of these works last more than a few hours, as they are inevitably washed away by the approaching tide. Luckily thanks to the beaches perfectly positioned cliffs, the artist gets to immortalize his creations on camera. For his and any other mom’s in the area, Chris created a Happy Mother’s Day mural complete with flowers. He also made this one man and his rake sign, a great piece of self-promotion.

1. The Fallen Project
British sand artists Jamie Wardley and Andy Moss in conjunction with volunteers from around the world created this stunning temporary installation on France’s infamous Normandy Beach. 9,000 silhouettes were stenciled into the sand to pay tribute to the civilians and soldiers who lost their lives in battle during D-Day, June 6, 1944. The team of volunteers, which numbered 500 individually drew each stencil into the sand where it would inevitably be washed away by the advancing tide. The project started out with only sixty volunteers, but as nearby locals heard about what was going on the group quickly multiplied to create the astounding sight. The artists hoped that the installation would remind people of the value of peace.
