how to make a concrete slab or concrete pad

Pouring a concrete slab is as easy as mixing concrete in a wheel barrow and pouring the concrete into a form. To make a concrete pad or making a concrete slab is not at all complicated.

It begins with knowing how to mix concrete. That's a lot like baking a cake. By following a recipe of concrete mix or Quikrete to water and carefully mixing the contents, your are soon ready to begin making a concrete slab. We transported the concrete mix to the place where the slab was to be laid with a wheel barrow. But you could also mix the concrete to make the slab by using 5-gallon buckets.
To mix the concrete for the new concrete slab in bucket, only mix 1/3 of the bag of Quikrete at a time so as to not overflow the bucket or create something to heavy to carry.

Knowing how to lay concrete is just the beginning of the work. You can't get around the fact that concrete bags are heavy! To those bags water is added making the concrete even heavier. So be prepared for some heavy lifting.

We also made sure that the space for the new concrete slab was level. So we used a Dewalt laser-level to ensure our box was completely level. We also added rigid foam board as a vapor barrier / blanket of insulation under the bottom and around the sides of what would become our new concrete slab.

As we poured the concrete in the box form, we continuously leveled the concrete with a 2x4 screed. We pushed the excess concrete into low spots as we leveled the slab of fresh concrete.

As the concrete slab slowly sets up, we continued to run a trowel over the surface to keep the concrete pad as smooth as possible.

One additional word of warning. Concrete tends to set up faster with higher temperature. So be aware of that as you plan to make a new concrete pad. temps in the 90's mean you have to work fast, while temps in the 60's or 70's give you more breathing room.

As to prepare to make a concrete slab, make sure you have all the necessary tools ready to go. We used shovels and wheel barrels for mixing, wood float and metal trowels for finishing the concrete after it is poured into the form. We also used our trusty laser level. It is a more expensive tool, but we use it on a great variety of our projects! Truly a great tool to have.
