Honda vs. Briggs and Stratton ; how to start a small gas engine and troubleshoot starting problems.

When renting a piece of equipment from a rental store, it is easy to be overwhelmed by an unfamiliar looking gas engine. We show you the basics of a small gas engine as well as how to start a couple of the common rental equipment engines you might see.
Gas engines have three basic things in common to start well.
1st , the engine needs air. That comes at the point of intake through the air filter. The air filter needs to be clean. With a clean filter it is important to make sure the choke is properly set. The choke is set on "choke" when first starting. If the engine is warm, the choke is moved to the "run" position.
2nd, the engine needs a spark to ignite the fuel. The spark plug is used to help create the spark.
3rd, the most easily overlooked is fuel. Is the gas tank full of fuel and is the fuel turned on (if there is a switch on the piece of equipment controlling that fuel delivery).
The engines in this video are a Honda gx160, a Briggs and Stratton 5.5 h.p., and a honda 6.5 h.p. lawnmower. The Honda GX series is a common engine seen on rental equipment.
