THE WESTMINSTER BAGRATION TIARA

THE FACTS

The Bagration tiara - diamonds, pink spinels and gold. The tiara dates to about 1810. Attributed to J B Fossin & Fils, a predecessor of the French jewellery firm Chaumet.

Made for the young widow of Prince Peter Ivanovitch Bagration, the Russian beauty, Princess Catherine (1783 - 1857), who was raised at the Russian imperial court. However, perhaps it was acquired, and for her it was named. The full set includes the tiara, a matching hair comb, a necklace of six pink spinels and diamond plaques with several pendants, and a pair of pendant earrings.

A modern sale placed it in a collection of note. The 6th Duke of Westminster purchased the tiara and suite in 1978 for his fiancee, Natalia Phillips (who has Russian ancestry herself), and she wore it on their wedding day in October 1978.

Natalia became the Dowager Duchess when the 6th Duke died in august 2016, aged 65. He was succeeded by his son Hugh Grosvenor, 7th Duke of Westminster.

The spinels in this copy were hand coloured by myself to give them their pink tone, this explains why you may not find the copy to buy straight away. I bought the all diamond version then coloured it. It is a lovely tiara to wear, my brides tell me (I am a hairstylist) and is certainly a favourite and one of the first copies I bought. At the time of buying from aliexpress in China it was about £10.00, so roughly $12.50.
