The Imperial aquamarine and diamond tiara was made by Koch / Workshop Gebr. Kreuter Hanau, production no 35110 in gold platinum, diamond and aquamarine, in 1910. Necklace and earrings (probably made by Hennell in 1980 and of course, not of the imperial collection- matching the imperial tiara, also with diamonds, aquamarine and made in platinum. Kosh were also responsible for the Prussian Tiara.
The shape of this tiara is a wonderful solution that allows the rectangular aquamarines to shine in their best cut as they pave the middle of the tiara, and the simple design of the diamonds surrounding them allows the blue stones to hold all the impact.
Made sometime around 1900, this tiara arranges rectangular aquamarine stones in a kokoshnik shape, a style based on traditional Russian headdresses, and accents them with lines and arches of diamonds all set in platinum. Not surprisingly, it has a Russian heritage – likely even an imperial Russian heritage. It was said to have belonged to the last tsarina, Alexandra Feodorovna (1872-1918). Though no known images exist of the Empress wearing the diadem. This isn’t the only aquamarine piece to have a connection to her: a Fabergé brooch with an exquisite and large Siberian aquamarine was an engagement present from Nicholas II. It has been suggested that the tiara was bought by Wartski, a London jeweller in the 1920s, as detailed in Tiaras: A History of Splendour by Geoffrey Munn, when it was one of many pieces sold off after the Russian revolution.
The tiara has surfaced a couple times since that original Russian sale, both times at auction houses. It was sold previously with a matching necklace and a matching pair of earrings at Sotheby’s in Switzerland in the 1980s, and recently it surfaced again offered at a private sale at Christie’s. They list it as the property of a European Noble Family. Since 2020 the kokoshnik is in the Japanese based Albion Collection -Albion Art Jewellery Institute. Its President, Kazumi Arikawa, is in charge of one of the biggest privately owned collection of historic jewels.
THE COPY
This copy comes from our friends at The Rose Bridal Store in China and is open set in full Cubic Zirconia as the video of the reverse of the tiara shows. The cost was £74.00 as of March 2021. Although the video shows the tiara with aquamarine stones, you can only buy it with clear stones. The solution a lot of tiara collectors go for is hand colouring. To save you all asking this is the method that seems to work for me.
Everyone has there own way.....mine? Sharpie permanent felt tip marker. Always use the lightest shade for the colour you need, you will be amazed how dark it seems. Secondly, if it is zirconia just colour on the back of the stone, if you colour on the front the stones loose some of their sparkle. Of course if it is an enclosed stone you have no choice but to colour the front. I think for the aquamarine tiara I used a very light pastel blue pen. Took me a while to find it but I'm sure there are lots of choices online. Start with a stone at the side first of all as a test piece and have a damp tissue to hand incase it isn't working, then you can wipe it off before it dries in and sets....hope this helps
Once again as many of you have asked for,I have put the tiara into a hairstyle and practice wig block from my salon, you may recall that I am a hairstylist. I have chosen a dark shade of hair since there are already photos on the Internet of a so called Duchess with blonde hair wearing a copy.
And lastly, THE CAT. For those of you who also follow wonderful The Rosebank Collection and its owner Patte Rosebank, will know that she recently had one of her videos invaded by her cat. Must be something about tiara collectors, we seem to have black cats. So just for Patte here is ANGEL THE CAT. He is a boy and I didn't name him. Almost a look-a-like for your own cat.
