THE STRATHMORE ROSE TIARA

The tiara was given to Lady Elizabeth Bowes Lyon by her father, the 14th Lord Strathmore and Kinghorne, on her marriage to the Duke of York in 1923. Formed as a garland of wild roses, it reflects the naturalistic style of head ornaments popular from the mid-nineteenth century onward. The tiara was retailed by the jewellers Catchpole & Williams, of 510 Oxford Street, who were known to deal in old jewellery and was supplied with fitted leather case and two alternative frames, one invisible (for wearing as a bandeau over the brow, a very 1920`s fashion), the other padded (Allowing the tiara to be worn on the top of the head). It could also be dismantled to form individual brooches, which were originally interchangeable with five single-collet sapphires. A fitting tiara from the Earl since roses stand for love in the language of flowers.
Queen Elizabeth was one of the first royal ladies not to rely on a hairpiece as support for tiaras (both Queen Mary and Queen Alexander invariably did), and when Duchess of York she wore this tiara in the modern (1920's) style, low on the brow and with fashionably short hair. The tiara was inherited by Queen Elizabeth II in 2002.
