This tiara was a wedding present from the ‘Girls of Great Britain and Ireland’ to the Duchess of York, later Queen Mary, in 1893. Made by E. Wolfe & Co., it was purchased from Garrard & Co. with money raised by a committee chaired by Lady Eva Greville, who became one of Queen Mary’s ladies-in-waiting The committee raised over £5,000 ($7,818) and purchased this tiara. At the request of the then princess, the remaining funds were donated to charity. In 1914, Mary adapted the tiara to take 13 diamonds in place of the large oriental pearls surmounting the tiara. Leslie Field, author of The Queen's Jewels, described it as, "a festoon-and-scroll with nine large oriental pearls on diamond spikes and set on a base of alternate round and lozenge collets between two plain bands of diamonds"
In November 1947 Queen Mary gave the tiara as a wedding present to her grand-daughter, Princess Elizabeth At first, Elizabeth wore the tiara without its base and pearls but the base was reattached in 1969.. The Queen has worn the tiara regularly throughout her reign and is depicted wearing it on certain issues of British and Commonwealth banknotes and coinage.
Facts
The tear-drop pearls from the original incarnation were relocated to the Cambridge Lovers Knot tiara.
The new diamonds that replaced the pearls on top came from The County of Surrey Necklace/ Tiara
The tiara was originally intended to be able to transform so could also be worn as a necklace.
It is known as "Granny's Tiara" within the family
It originally included two frames, one to wear it as a tiara and the other a smaller one to make a coronet.
