The Kent City of London Fringe Tiara

This diamond fringe tiara is mounted in gold and set in silver, in the classic Russian fringe style . This jewel is unusual in that it flares at the sides to charming effect, and unlike many other tiaras in kokoshnik style, it does not dismantle to make a necklace.
Given to Princess Marina of Greece & Denmark, Duchess of Kent. This tiara was as a wedding gift in 1934 from the Lord Mayor and the City of London on her marriage to Prince George of the United Kingdom, Duke of Kent, youngest son of King George V and Queen Mary. It is a tiara of graduated spikes, made in around 1870 and formerly owned by the Queen of Pudukota. Marina is often cited as having worn it on her wedding day in 1934, actually she wore the Vladimir Fringe Tiara from her mother on the wedding day itself. Fringe tiaras can be very difficult to tell apart even after years of study, sometimes the only way is by counting the diamonds on the posts. One way of identifying this tiara is by the lack of a supporting ring across the back, probably due to the fact that it does not convert into a necklace.
Princess Marina certainly wore it for many important events (such as the 1937 coronation of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth) and portraits throughout her life. Princess Marina was a great-grandniece of Queen Alexandra through her father's side.
In 1963, Princess Marina's daughter Princess Alexandra of Kent [Lady Ogilvy] wore the tiara on her wedding day, but the tiara was not left to her; after Marina's death in 1968, the diadem passed to her youngest child, Prince Michael
Princess Michael of Kent nee Marie-Christine von Reibnitz is the current owner of this tiara. Princess Michael created a version incorporating a black velvet halo on which the tiara rests; on top is a diamond reverie which was from King George V. Actually she didn't wear if for her actual Wedding which was a Civil Ceremony, but for the ball held afterwards, or the night before at a ball held in Vienna on the eve of their wedding, depending on which information you go by. Although not as regularly worn as the Pearl Festoon Tiara, the City of London Fringe is usually worn at State Banquets.
