Cold Case Detectives Pursue Landlord Who Claimed Self-Defense in Tenant's Death

The quiet community of Nature's Trail Mobile Home Park near Tampa, Florida was rocked in July 2007 when reports came in of a fatal altercation between landlord Jonathan Burns and his tenant Tanya. Burns claimed he killed Tanya in self-defense after she attacked him, showing stab wounds to support his story. However, inconsistencies in his account and ambiguous evidence raised doubts. With an unclear picture of exactly what transpired, the case soon stalled.

Nearly 14 years later in 2021, cold case detectives with the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office decided to take a fresh look at the case. They reopened the investigation, hoping modern investigative techniques and a new examination of available clues could provide clarity. With Burns' self-defense claim unsettled and key questions unresolved, the detectives were determined to thoroughly re-investigate the incident. Their goal was to piece together a clearer narrative of the deadly encounter between Burns and Tanya in the mobile home park that day in 2007. After so much time, justice for Tanya depended on resolving the uncertainties.
