On August 12, 1993, 39-year-old abalone diver David R. Miles faced death near Westport Union Landing State Beach. The great white shark, a fearsome apex predator, was the attacker. As David and his comrades dove, the 20-foot beast struck stealthily, its razor-sharp jaws clamping onto his head and shoulders. Unexpectedly, the shark released its grip, giving David a chance to escape. He swam towards a rocky sanctuary, the disoriented shark following. Exhausted, David reached the rocks, avoiding the deadly jaws.
