Why Ivory Coast Insists on the Name Cote d’Ivoire

Obviously Cote d’Ivoire is French and The Ivory Coast is English but you might have noticed that Cote d’Ivoire is often used in English as the name of this West African country, even though we usually translate names of countries to English. It’s always hard to get people to change the name they call something. Especially for names of countries. Of course if you insist, I will call Germany Deutschland, Spain España, Turkiye Turkey and I will pronounce Chile "shee-lay" but some countries were given English names that seemed more like geographical descriptions than proper names, so they insisted upon standardizing these in names the local people preferred. So why is it Illegal to say Ivory Coast?
