Burkina Faso's Wild Obsession with Horses

In Burkina Faso, horse-riding is more than a leisure pastime, it is the tradition, the love and lore of an entire nation. With Burkina Faso's Insane Obsession with Horses it is no coincidence that the country's coat of arms depicts two horses, that the coveted prize of Africa’s biggest film festival, Fespaco held every two years in the capital, Ouagadougou, is a Golden Stallion trophy, that the nickname of the national football team is ‘Les Etalons’ which translates to The Stallions or that the most common surname for boys here is Ouedraogo, which means.. You guessed it, Stallion in the predominant native language.

In countries populated by dozens of different ethnic groups, national identity is often an elusive pursuit of identity, but here in Burkina Faso, one thing is sure: that identity reflects the country’s traditional fascination and is rooted to a longstanding relationship with a beloved animal with a mane, tail and hooves.
