VLACH ID-number: ladi1251TRV0027a
Description:
Lili Kaneti recalls different episodes from her past which she spent in Gallipoli, where she was born, and in Edirne, where she moved after getting married. She tells us about how sceptical she was towards her arranged marriage when she was just 17 and how she then grew to love her husband dearly and lived a very happy life. Moreover, Lili remembers her relationship with her mother-in-law with whom she lived for 14 years and the relationship with the neighbours, Jews and Turks alike. According to her, the Jews in Edirne were very collegial and they led a good and peaceful life. Towards the end of the interview, she ruminates upon her relationship with Judeo-Spanish and how she used it to communicate in Israel when she came into contact with other Spanish speaking immigrants. Finally, she relates an anecdote about how she acquired an accent in Turkish and how this accent was perceived by Turkish people.
