Pride?! It’s only pride

On the 14/05/07, the gaon HaRav Shalom Ber Sorotzkin shlit'a, came to the Rosh Yeshiva zatzal’s house for advice. Among the questions that were asked at that time, R’ Sorotzkin asked a seemingly simple question, connected to a story that was going on at the time at Ateret Shlomo school In Beit Shemesh.

A young widow and mother of young children, had remarried a man whose children who had already studied in the local orthodox school (Cheider), and they wanted the mother’s children to get excepted as well.

This request was met with resistance from the parents in the school. They demanded that the orphans be rejected. It seemed like an irrational demand, but their pressure forced R’ Sorotzkin to consider excepting them.
Like any other conundrum, R’ Sorotzkin visited the Rosh Yeshiva zatza”l for advice.

R’ Shteinman was very protective of the family unit. And his famous saying “Pride?! It’s only pride (and not to be taken seriously)” was coined at this meeting. He worked against those who sought to estrange children who didn’t fit conventional molds and create a space for everyone.

Then he began to talk about the Cheider he studied in as a child in the city of Brisk
.
That same evening R’ Sorotzkin went back to Beit Shemesh and the children were accepted, according to the encouragement of R’ Shteinman zatza”l.

The original materials were kept secret for a long time, like the entire archive of the Ateret Shlomo institutions, and were not revealed until April 2010. These materials leaked to the media, who misrepresented the content.
