Inside The $62 Million Gulfstream G550

Inside The $62 Million Gulfstream G550 Private Jet

0:00 - Intro
Since Gulfstream introduced the G550, it has sold more than 500 of them for two big reasons: range and cabin comfort. Although there are jets that have replaced the G550 as the manufacturer’s flagships in recent years, the earlier aircraft remains in production and very popular. Here is everything you need to know about the Gulfstream G550.

0:33 - Interior
The G550 is able to carry up to 19 passengers (dependent upon the configuration) and sleep up to eight passengers. One of the most notable features with all Gulfstream’s are the large, oval-shaped windows. These windows are larger than the competition and the G550 features 14 Gulfstream Signature Oval Windows throughout the cabin, making the interior feel even larger and help boost wellness through the abundance of natural light.

Despite the length of time that the plane has been in service it still features all the modern technology that one would expect from a private jet. All seats feature a personal audio and visual display and cabin settings are able to be controlled through a smartphone app, such as the window shades, the cabin temperature, video input, cabin audio and flight information. When configuring the aircraft everything is bespoke to the customer with a wide range of cabin configurations available.

You can option forward or aft galley configurations, with or without a crew compartment and up to four living areas. If you want a rice cooker in the galley this can be optioned. As standard the G550 also features a wireless network, satellite communication, Iridium phone, a fax and a printer.
The cabin altitude never exceeds 6,000 feet or 1,830 meters, which is lower than most airliners and business jets. On top of that, a 100 percent fresh-air system frequently replaces cabin air, eliminating the health risks posed by recycled-air systems.
This cabin altitude, combined with the low cabin noise levels of 53 dB and 100% fresh cabin air, means that no matter what you are doing – working, relaxing, sleeping or dining – you will be operating at peak efficiency.

The cabin maintains a sea-level altitude through 29,000 feet and has a maximum altitude of 6,000 feet. Ample ambient light brightens the cabin through the G550’s 14 large oval signature windows. LED reading and cabin lights reduce eye fatigue. The relatively low cabin altitude, fresh air and lighting combine to create a comfortable environment and minimize jet lag.

A used G550 with Elite is virtually indistinguishable from a new-production aircraft. It combines classic, modern styling with the latest technology and conveniences.

7:37 - Cockpit
Talking about the cockpit, the G550 requires two pilots to operate the aircraft, which is standard within this category of planes. The plane features Gulfstream’s PlaneView avionics system, which was developed in conjunction with Honeywell. When the G550 was released it pioneered several performance capabilities and flight deck innovations.

The PlaneView system is no exception and is an entirely glass flight deck.
Four 14-inch LCD displays dominate the control center, increasing the viewing area while decreasing pilot workload with streamlined flight data. Additionally, the Enhanced Vision System on the G550 leverages infrared imaging technology to display what the human eye cannot see when visibility is reduced or obscured.

The flight deck can also feature an innovative Head-Up Display, which projects flight data to a transparent screen in the pilot’s forward field of vision, increasing safety during critical moments such as during take-off and landing.

8:45 - Performance
The G550 is powered by two Rolls-Royce BR710 engines mounted to the rear of the fuselage. Each engine produces 15,385 lbs of thrust and 30,770 lbs total, which means the plane can take off in just 5,910 feet or 1,800 meters and can land in just 2,770 feet or 844 meters.

The engines are able to push the G550 to a maximum altitude of 51,000 feet or 15.5 kilometers, and a maximum cruise speed of 488 knots. With a Maximum Take-Off Weight of 91,000 lbs or 41,300 kilograms, the G550 has a range of 6,750 nautical miles or 12,500 kilometers, allowing it to hop from Europe to the Americas, Africa and most of Asia without issue.

9:49 - Charter Cost
The estimated hourly cost to rent a G550 is $7,650 per flight hour.

10:19 - Purchase Cost
The price for a new G550 is 62 million dollars before options. A pre-owned G550 from 2006 will cost 15 million dollars, with a 2012 model costing 23 million dollars.
