How to Start Strength Training as an Older Adult - Presentation Recording
To join Stronger for Life go to: nevertoooldtolift.com/course
During the presentation, I covered everything from:
How often you should be doing strength training and how many of us are actually meeting the guidelines.
Recognising that you probably have objections to starting and I challenged each of these objections to reassure you that they are not reasons to avoid beginning your strength training journey.
I introduced you to other people who had the same objections that you might have and how they overcame them. Not only did it not stop them from starting, but we also heard how they now feel less pain and have more energy than they did before.
How important the process of goal planning is, so that you keep your motivation to continue working out when things start to feel difficult.
That choosing which exercises to include in your program isn’t as important as the intensity at which you perform those exercises.
How to progress your workouts when they begin to feel easy and why it is so important to continue to challenge yourself as you move forward.
I gave some information on the Stronger for Life online course, which I have discounted the price for the next week (details at the end of this email).
I've added timestamps to this email and replay page for your convenience:
Just ONE of these topics covered in the video might be the key to giving you the confidence to start your strength training journey:
02:20 What the World Health Organisation says about how often we should be doing strength training.
11:25 I introduce Phil's story to show you why you are never too old to start strength training.
15:40 Chronic conditions aren't a reason not to start strength training. Carol and Jan's story will show you that strength training might actually help the condition that you are worried about making worse.
19:23 Why being weak and allowing sarcopenia to progress is more dangerous than lifting weights.
23:57 That you don't have to do this in a gym, strength training can be done from home.
30:20 Why goal planning is so important and how it is often overlooked.
38:25 The concept of training to fatigue and how it relates to building strength.
41:53 Some of the exercises that you might choose for your workouts.
51:34 How to progress and why staying in your comfort zone won't build muscle strength.
