"Atmospheric River" - Flood Watch & Winter Storm Warning

The much anticipated "atmospheric river" hit California Sunday. The heavy rainfall brought 3-6" in the Los Angeles County. A Flood Watch for heavy flooding and mudslides has been posted for Kern County and the Los Angeles County area through 4 AM Tuesday. Bakersfield didn't receive too much rainfall, but had .04" just after midnight this morning. The main reason, the "rain shadow". The strong prevailing winds out of the south (Sunday's High Wind Warning) blocked any hopes of rainfall for the South Valley. Light rainfall to scattered showers should begin, now that the winds have died down.

Bakersfield has already received .95" rainfall for the February. Our monthly average is 1.18". We should go over that by Tuesday as another .25-.75" rainfall still forecast. The Kern County mountain areas could see another .75-1.50". There is a likely hood of up to 2.50" depending on the location.

Snowfall levels will continue to drop as we move into Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday as the colder portion of the storm arrives. We have currently been seeing the warm atmospheric river roll in from the subtropics. Tuesday morning an off shore low out of the northwest moves overhead. This will kick in colder air providing for snow levels to drop (plus our temperatures). Snow levels start at 6,000' today and fall to 3,500' Thursday. A Winter Storm Warning runs through 4 AM Tuesday due to the heavier influx of the storm. Even though snow levels will be dropping later into the week, the warning will subside by tomorrow.
