You've sued your doctor.
For medical malpractice.
For causing you permanent injuries.

Your doctor denies he did anything wrong.
He also says that nothing he did caused you any harm.
Besides, he argues, your injuries are not that bad.

During your lawsuit, you will need to appear for questioning.
By the defense lawyer.
To learn about what happened.

To learn about your injuries.
To learn how your injuries affect you.
He'll be asking you lots of questions.

This question and answer session is known as a deposition.
It's pretrial testimony.
Given in your attorney's office.

In his conference room specifically.

There's no judge there.
There's no jury there either.
Your attorney is there.

The defense lawyer is there.
So is a court reporter.
To record all of the questions asked and all of your answers.

Your answers carry the same exact weight as if you are testifying at trial.

During this pretrial testimony, the defense lawyer wants to know if you are claiming lost earnings.
You say "Yes."
Then he asks you how much you earned each year for the past three years.

You tell him.
He says "Prove it."
"Show me your W2 forms or 1099 forms."

You tell him you'll send him a copy.
Then he asks "Have you filed tax returns for the past three years?"

The answer could destroy your credibility and your case.
