You hear about large verdicts every once in a while.
Is that really what the injured victim takes home?
More importantly, who really pays?

The reality is that in a civil lawsuit, when a jury determines that an injured victim is entitled to receive substantial compensation for the harms, losses and damages they incurred because of someone else's carelessness, the defense will do everything in their power to try and reduce that verdict or have it thrown out.

That's a fact.

Only after the defense has exhausted all of their remedies and is still found to be legally responsible for paying a significant verdict, the next question that must be answered is “Who pays?”

In a medical malpractice case where you have sued a doctor who is careless and also hospital staff, you would think that the doctor or hospital staff would be personally responsible to pay.

In fact, the doctor and the hospital will have liability insurance designed specifically for the purposes of paying any judgment in this type of case.

However, you should know that there is a limit to how much they will pay.

That limit depends upon how much available insurance coverage there is and whether there is additional insurance known as excess insurance.
