Doing the work
The history of South African hip hop is explicitly political - the lyrics, style, approach, but now, the most visible hip hop scene from South Africa that gets exported and seen on shows like #Sway'sUniverse are associated with black capitalism. What political work is hip hop doing today, if any? Where did things change?
Johannesburg based writer, photographer, videographer and longtime contributor to Africa Is a Country, Tseliso Monaheng, along with Warrick Moses, Postdoctoral Research Fellow with the CIPHER Hip Hop Interpellation project at University College Cork, Ireland, reflect on these questions. Reminding us that there is no lack of consciousness amongst performers while at the same time there is a sense that one doesn't always have to promote a conventionally political idea or aesthetic.
