Travel back over a century to a different world on Rasen Lane, Lincoln
Today's video finds us in uphill Lincoln again, specifically on Rasen Lane, which connects Newport to Burton Road. The view is looking west towards Burton Road from near the Newport end.
This area of Lincoln is just to the north of the old Roman and Medieval settlements, and was largely agricultural land until the late Victorian and early Edwardian periods. The layout of the major roads here, including Rasen Lane, was probably established during the High Medieval Era, along existing field boundaries. At this time most of the land in the area would have been fields or grazed heath, until much of it was enclosed by Act of Parliament in 1803. During the early 19th century the population of the city grew rapidly, requiring much new housing and associated facilities, starting just outside the old city walls, then moving northwards across this area. Although some areas of open land were retained during this time, most of the area was eventually built on during the late 19th century.
The video took longer to make than I first envisaged. Rasen Lane looks like a quite little street, but it is in fact quite a rat run these days, with people using it as a short cut around the historic old town with it's driving restrictions. It is also a bus route, so having to stand in the road to get the new photo was a challenge to say the least, but I got it done on the second visit.
Rasen Lane has featured in videos before, with one from the junction with Burton Road, and one of the Lord Tennyson pub that was demolished in 2015. In fact you can see the red brick apartment block that replaced the Tennyson in the far distance.
You can see that some old Victorian terraced houses remain, but the star of the show has to be the wonderful cottage on the right in the old photo. Sadly it has been replaced by a modern building. The old photo is undated, but it looks Edwardian to me, or possibly even Victorian? It is certainly a window into a very different Lincoln, before it was taken over by the cars that made my life so tough getting the new photo!
