Travel back to the mid 20th century at Laceby Street and Monks Abbey in Lincolns East End.
#lincoln #history #memories #nostalgia #thenandnow
I lived in the Monks Road area during the 1980s/90s, so I'm always fascinated by old photos of the area. I've done many time shifts here, including a few not long ago on the Monks Abbey site, seen here at the bottom of Laceby Street across Monks Road itself.
The wonderful old photo here is from Ralph Jackson, who lived on Laceby Street. Unfortunately I don't have a date but from the clothes I'd guess 1940s/50s?
From the discussions that accompanied the photo where I found it on Facebook one of the significant things in the old photo is the "maypole" swing, that sounds highly dangerous and almost certainly wouldn't be allowed today! There also isn't a fence round the playpark, which seems wrong next to such a busy road.
You can also just see one of the old cooling towers, right of centre, at the power station by the river. Unsurprisingly the road isn't choked with parked cars as it is today.
