Perhaps this is the first occasion in all of Jerry Springer's show history that a "horror show" doesn't involve a former or current guest.
The iconic broadcaster, who died Thursday of pancreatic cancer, voiced a memorable character in an episode of Matt Groening's always prescient animated series "The Simpsons" called "Treehouse of Horror."
In the Halloween-themed episode "Starship Poopers," which was written by "Futurama" co-creator David X. Cohen, he provided a voice appearance, as reported by SlashFilm.
The episode was a parody of how "The Jerry Springer Show" grabbed, or rather "ruined," the cultural zeitgeist, and should not be confused with Paul Verhoeven's science fiction action film "Starship Troopers," released the same year.
Springer, who was known for never taking himself seriously, happily engaged in self-parody.

The singer replies, "Homer," not realizing that she has just misidentified Homer's alien enemy. That sets off a chain of shenanigans that culminates in an all-out battle between Maggie, Springer, Homer, and Kang, complete with the bleeped-out curses, flying punches, and security officers trying to calm things down that are trademarks of the Springer program.
The episode's cutting satire continued to be discussed years after it was broadcast.
In 2010, IGN ranked it as the 10th best "Treehouse of Horror" episode because it "delivers consistent laughs and a great ending."
Perhaps Springer's participation was typical behavior for a broadcaster who frequently poked fun at his status as television's foremost purveyor of smut.
The humble comedian told The Post in 2022, "In a sense, I've become an adjective in the English language when people say 'I'm having a Jerry Springer moment,' or 'Don't go Jerry Springer on me now.'" When someone uses a common term, "everyone knows instantly what they're talking about."In addition, he implied that his reputation may not deserve the highest regard.
It's shameful to call it my legacy.' "I don't think people are going to look back on this era and say, 'Boy, thank God we had Jerry Springer,'" he remarked.
