The lingerie and physical intimacy entrepreneur and advocate for women in business Jacqueline Gold passed away at the age of 62.
According to her relatives, she passed away on Thursday night after a long battle with breast cancer.
Ms. Gold transformed the four-store Ann Summers operation into a multimillion-pound powerhouse.
In 2016, she received a CBE for her contributions to the advancement of female entrepreneurs, businesswomen, and social entrepreneurs.
Family members of Ms. Gold released the following statement: "Our wonderful executive chair Jacqueline Gold CBE passed away yesterday evening, surrounded by her loving family: husband Dan, daughter Scarlett, sister Vanessa, and brother-in-law Nick.
"She was... an activist for women in business and championed female entrepreneurs with the aim to change the working environment for women," the statement continued.
Her passing came only two months after that of her father, David Gold, the joint-chairman of West Ham United, who passed away at the age of 86.
She was a trailblazer, a visionary, and the most remarkable lady," Vanessa, the sister and CEO of Ann Summers, said of their sibling. "All of which makes this news that more harder to accept."
In 1972, Ms. Gold's father and his brother Ralph purchased the company from the original founders, who had launched their first Ann Summers shop the year before.
Ms. Gold began working at the company in which her family had an ownership stake as an intern, but she ultimately played a pivotal role in making the Ann Summers brand more appealing to women.
Yet, she revealed to the News in 2015 that the all-male board of directors of the corporation initially rejected her proposal.
A member of the board "threw down his pen and said, 'this isn't going to work, ladies aren't interested in sex,'" she added.
In the vein of Tupperware, she launched a new service catering exclusively to women, and it was a smashing success.
Her strategy proved so successful that it prompted the company to open more Ann Summers outlets along the High Street. Now, there are 88 of them spread out across the United Kingdom and Ireland.
The newly remodeled establishments were well-lit and marketed towards women in an effort to shake the stigma associated with seedy dives.
She made the following statement to the BBC: "When I first started working at Ann Summers, only 10% of our customers were female; today, that number has increased to 80%.
The company has evolved from the "raincoat brigade" to "a feminine institution," as I like to remark.
Ms. Gold not only ran the company but also acted as a mentor to other female business owners and advocated for legislation to promote gender parity in the corporate world.
She lamented that there were so few women to look up to, calling it "disappointing" that nothing had changed.
She expressed her disappointment in the fact that "we are still having the same discourse around female empowerment and equality," citing an article from the paper as evidence. But, despite our fast-paced culture, advancement is excruciatingly sluggish.
