Jim Brown an NFL legend and prominent civil rights activist passed away at the age of 87. his family confirmed Brown passed away peacefully on Thursday evening with his wife Monique by his side in their Los Angeles residence to the world he was an activist an actor and a football star his wife remarked he was a fantastic husband father and grandfather to our family our souls are broken in his final season the running back was named the League's most valuable player for the third time having also won the award in his inaugural season he was the star player on the 1964 Championship winning Browns team but he quickly switched to acting and appeared in dozens of films such as Any Given Sunday The Dirty Dozen and the Running Man Brown used his platform to become a leader of the Black Power movement when he was at the height of his Fame in the 1960s which coincided with the Civil Rights Movement across the United States Brown alongside boxing Legend Muhammad Ali and basketball legend Bill Russell was a leader in the fight for equality in a tribute the Browns referred to their most iconic athlete as a legend leader activist and Visionary the statement continued it is impossible to express the profound love and gratitude we feel for having the opportunity to be a small part of Jim's incredible Life and Legacy we lament his passing but rejoice in the indelible light he bestowed upon the universe our thoughts and prayers are with Jim's family friends and everyone he touched along the path Roger Goodell NFL Commissioner praise Brown's impact on and off the field he expressed condolences on behalf of the entire NFL family to Monique and her family Jim Brown was a talented athlete and one of the most dominant players to ever set foot on a sports field but he was also a cultural figure who contributed to the advancement of change during his nine-year NFL career which coincided with the domestic Civil Rights Movement he became a Pioneer and role model for athletes engaged in Social initiatives outside of their sport he inspired fellow athletes to make a difference particularly in their local communities Brown Remains the Brown's all-time rushing leader with 12 312 yards and 106 touchdowns over nine Sensational Seasons garnering him induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1971. brown is ranked 11th in the NFL's all-time rushing rankings and his average of 5.2 yards per carry is the highest of any player with over 10 000 career rushing yards funeral still not announced thanks for watching
