Subject and Verb Agreement - English -Easy English Grammar. A VERB which shows action or existence (be, am, is, are, was, were, being, been) must agree with its SUBJECT in person and number. (e.g., He is my friend. They are on our team.) Compound subjects differing in person or number joined by OR or NOR require that the verb agree with the closer subject. (e.g., Either she or her sisters are responsible. Either her sisters or she is responsible.) A total sum of money, a total distance, or a total amount of time requires a single verb. (e.g., Two weeks is a long time to wait.) The expression a number (meaning many) requires a plural verb. The expression the number (meaning total) requires a singular verb. (e.g. A number of surfers were there. The number was huge.)
