Learn Dependent Clauses with Relative Pronouns - EASY English Grammar
Learn to write sentences using dependent clauses that are linked to the main sentence structure by a RELATIVE PRONOUN -
who, whose, what, whom, which, that
DEPENDENT CLAUSES --(SUBORDINATE CLAUSES) are sentence structures used as an adjective, adverb, or noun, usually linked by a subordinate conjunction or RELATIVE PRONOUNS.
RELATIVE PRONOUNS -- are pronouns that link their own dependent clauses to the independent clause of the main sentence structure.
The relative pronouns are: who - whose - what - whom - which - that.
Examples:
She is the person (who took the key to the Jeep).
Note: The relative pronoun WHO links the dependent clause to the independent clause, the main sentence structure.
The seal (that is chasing me) squirted me in the eye.
Note: THAT is linking the dependent clause to the independent clause, the main sentence structure.
Some relative pronouns are restricted as to type of antecedent and sentence function. WHO and WHOM must have an antecedent referring to people. THAT and WHICH refer to inanimate objects or animals. WHAT does not take a stated antecedent but refers only to inanimate objects.
WHO is used only for subjects and predicate nominatives.
WHO got that big fish?
WHOM is used only for the direct and indirect objects of verbs and verbals, for the object of a preposition, and for the subject of an infinitive phrase.
That girl whom you saw is my sister.
(you saw whom). - whom is the direct object
The use of WHO and WHOM is determined by the pronoun's use in its own structure.
