Dependent Clauses - ADJECTIVE CLAUSES - Easy English Grammar
Here are three types of Dependent Clauses:
1) ADJECTIVE CLAUSE-- a sentence structure describing a noun or pronoun or noun form.
It answers the same 3 questions an ADJECTIVE answers:
1- Which one?
2- What kind of?
3 – How many?
ADJECTIVE CLAUSE
The DEPENDENT ADJECTIVE CLAUSE is linked to the main sentence structure by either a subordinate conjunction or relative pronoun: RELATIVE PRONOUNS - who, whose, what, whom, which, that.
The dependent ADJECTIVE CLAUSE is more often connected by a RELATIVE PRONOUN.
The relative pronoun often describes the noun our pronoun and functions as an ADJECTIVE in a sentence.
dependent ADVERB CLAUSE is most often connected by a subordinate conjunction like WHEN, WHILE, SINCE. (For more SUBORDINATE CONJUNCTIONS go to Englishgrammarhelp.com)
SUBORDINATE CONJUNCTIONS -- a word which connects its own dependent clause to the word described by the dependent clause. ALTHOUGH, BECAUSE, IF, THAN are always subordinate conjunctions.
RELATIVE PRONOUN -- a pronoun which shows the connection between its own dependent clause and its own antecedent and which performs a function within its own clause. The relative pronouns are: who - whose - what - whom - which - that.
The relative pronoun is not merely a link but always has a specific function within its own clause.
Some relative pronouns are restricted as to type of antecedent
and sentence function. WHO and WHOM must have an antecedent persons. WHICH and THAT refer to inanimate objects or animals. WHAT does not take a stated antecedent but refers only to inanimate objects.
WHO is used only for subjects and predicate nouns. WHOM is used only for the direct and indirect objects of verbs and verbals, for the object of a preposition, and for the subject of an infinitive phrase.
Occasionally some of the relative pronouns take the suffix-- EVER to indicate the antecedent is not specifically identified--WHOEVER, WHOMEVER, WHATEVER, WHICHEVER.
The other dependent clauses are
2) ADVERBIAL CLAUSE--a sentence structure describing a verb, adjective, or adverb. It answers the same 5 questions an ADVERB answers:
1- where, 2- when, 3- why, 4- how, 5- to what extent.
3) NOUN CLAUSE--a sentence structure used as a subject, appositive, object of a preposition, or some type of complement.
