The Baking Hour: May Queen Cake

Welcome back to The Baking Hour friends! In this comeback episode our star baker Zekeriya pays homage to a chilling but thrilling movie, Midsommar! Looking for some Midsommar cake ideas? How about May Queen cake ideas? Well, the summer solstice is upon us. With it comes longer days, festivities and cakes. Take a trip (or two) with us as we work to make a proper tribute for our May Queen this year! We choose our May Queen a bit differently though. Whoever can stay standing after baking the most goods is crowned with this stellar cake! Follow along and laugh with our Midsommar commentary as this unique 1.5 tier cake is compiled before your eyes, much how the movie’s insanity compiles over it’s two hours and eighteen minute runtime.

Unnerving and disturbing vibes are what you’ll find in the movie, not in this video though! You’ll learn more than fear. Who knows though, Zain is a pretty scary guy! For this cake, we start with a single layer tier, acting as a pedestal to the second tier, our main focal point. The first tier is simple vanilla with swiss meringue buttercream, adorned in intricate patterns inspired from the festive dresses all the crazy cult folks wore. After stabbing that bad boy with four support straws, we next compile the smaller second tier.

This second tier consists of four full layers, but the overall diameter is much smaller. In between each layer is a dam of buttercream holding in sweet and vibrant strawberry jelly. After stacking the layers, due to the smaller size, a stake is needed through the center when crumb coating and frosting. The tier has been compiled, but now it's time to further detail it. Using a darker shade of the buttercream, Zekeriya masterfully applies it in patterns that resemble a large shine like rock. After that, we can carve our main center piece with the iconic shine iconography that is shown in the movie itself. Paint a little blood on there to look like you’ve just slit your hand open and touched it and boom! You got yourself a cult cake!

After finishing detailing the second tier, Zekeriya continues along by uniting the two tiers, much like Maja was able to unite with the moron Christian. Taking some lovely wildflowers, Zekeriya tops an already amazing looking cake with them. The result is what you see in the video. Pretty incredible right?!
