FOR ALL HIKERS: West Coast Trail on Vancouver Island.

For All Hikers: The CBC’s Vancouver cameraman Alan Stewart and reporter Andrew Younghusband’s June 1997 documentary for national television on The West Coast Trail, a 75 km hike from Port Renfrew to Bamfield on the west coast of Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada. It was built almost a hundred years ago as a life saving trail with safety cabins and a state of the art telegraph line. With nearly 50 shipwrecks of consequence, the coast was referred to as the graveyard of the Pacific. 136 people died when the SS Valentia sank there in 1906. Nowadays the Trail is used as a good holiday and a playground by yuppy survivalists. It is one of the great adventure trips of the world and on the bucket list for many hikers. This temperate rain forest contains trees that are 800 years old. We met people hiking the Trail from Australia and Northern Ireland who came for the challenge of doing what is described as one of the 4 Great Walks of the World.
